Buy Us a CoffeeWhat this tool does
Name writing is the first real schoolwork most children meet, and it is usually made the slow way: one sheet per child, typed or edited one at a time in a design program. This tool does the whole roster in one paste. Type or paste your class list, one name per line, and it builds a single PDF with one page per child. Each page opens with a model row: the child's name in full, dark print, on proper primary guide lines. Then come the guided tracing rows, the name in grey to trace over. The last row is empty. That one is the child's, to try alone. First and last names are both welcome, and up to 40 names fit in one PDF, which covers any real class plus a few late arrivals.
How to use it in a classroom
Print the set once, at the start of term, and keep the pages in name-card order. They get used a few ways. Morning sign-in is the classic: each child traces their name before joining the carpet. Some classes keep the pages in individual folders at the handwriting center, out every day. Others send a sheet home in the first weeks, when parents start asking what they can practise. The folder version is usually the one still going strong in June. And because the whole class is one file, reprinting a lost page is just reprinting one page of the PDF. When a child outgrows the jumbo letters, regenerate the same list at large or standard size - the list is still in your plans, and the new set takes a minute.
Letter sizes, shades, and the guide lines
The three sizes are what their names say. Jumbo is for September beginners and any child still working on grip and letter formation - the letters are big enough that a chubby pencil stays inside them. Large is the everyday kindergarten and grade 1 size. Standard suits grade 2 and up, or compact practice you want to fit alongside other work. The guide lines are real primary lines, drawn from the font's own measurements: a faint top line where tall letters reach, a dashed midline where short letters stop, and a solid baseline everything sits on. The trace shade is exactly what it sounds like - light, medium, or dark grey. Pick light for a child who is nearly independent, dark for a beginner who needs to see the path clearly. One limit, stated plainly: the tracing letters are Patrick Hand, an open-license handwriting font, drawn in grey - not a dotted style. The big commercial school handwriting systems are paid fonts we cannot bundle. If your district mandates one specific style, compare a printed page against it before a whole year of practice.
Here are the letter shapes themselves, in the tracing font, so you can judge them before a single page is printed:
Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj Kk Ll Mm Nn Oo Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Uu Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz
A worked example
Say your kindergarten class has 22 children and it is the first full week of school. You copy the roster from your class list - Ava Smith, Liam Brown, and so on down to the last name - and paste it into the box. You pick jumbo letters, because September hands are new, and the light grey shade, because your printer is gentle with ink and the class will trace in thick crayon anyway. You add your room name, "Room 12", so stray pages find their way home. Download, print at Actual size, and you have 22 pages, one per child, each with a model row, seven or eight tracing rows, and a try-it-alone line at the bottom. Total time: about two minutes, most of it waiting for the printer.
Printing at true size
Letter height is the lesson on these pages, so size matters more here than anywhere else on the site. EduPacket draws every letter at the exact size you picked, in real points, for the paper you selected. Your printer dialog is the one place size can quietly change: if it is set to "fit to page", the driver shrinks the page and jumbo letters arrive merely large. Choose Actual size or 100% and what prints is what you chose. If you want to check your printer once and be sure, our print size check page prints a box you can measure with a real ruler.
Questions teachers ask
Where do the names go? Are they stored anywhere?
Nowhere, and no. The PDF is built in your own browser by code running in this page. The class list is never uploaded, stored, or logged - there is no server involved at any point. That is a deliberate design choice for a tool that handles children's names, and it is stated the same way on our privacy page.
Two children have the same first name. Will one page be skipped?
No. Names are never deduplicated in this tool. Two Liams get two pages, and a repeated full name gets a page each time it appears, because in a real class a repeated name usually means a second child, not a typo.
Can I get dotted letters instead of grey ones?
Not honestly, yet. A true dotted style needs a dotted handwriting font, and the good ones are commercial fonts with licences a free site cannot bundle. Grey shades are what a PDF can do truthfully with an open font, so grey shades are what we offer - in three strengths, so you can pick how much guidance a child gets. If a quality open dotted font appears, this is the first tool that gets it.
What about names with accents or apostrophes?
Apostrophes and hyphens are kept (O'Brien, Mary-Kate), names are printed exactly in the case you typed, because McDonald is not Mcdonald, and accented letters from Western European names (José, Chloé, Søren) are drawn as typed. One thing to know: the list is tidied as you paste it. Numbers and characters outside that letter set - including scripts such as Chinese or Arabic, which the tracing font cannot draw - are removed before the pages are made, so read the list back before you print.
Is it really free, for a whole class?
Yes - no account, no per-page charge, no watermark, and no smaller print run hiding behind a paywall. The site will be supported by advertising on its pages, never on your printouts.
